Who is eligible for home health care services?

Medicare and most private insurance companies require that the following criteria be met to qualify a patient for home health care services:

  • You must be an eligible Medicare or insurance beneficiary.
  • One of your physicians must order and supervise the home health care services.
  • You must be considered homebound, meaning it is a taxing effort for you to leave the home; you can leave the home only infrequently with the help of another person or assistive device.
  • You require skilled nursing or therapy services on an intermittent (not full time) basis.

What does Medicare pay for?

Medicare will pay for all of your home health care visits when the above criteria are met. Medicare will also pay for supplies needed for your care; however, Medicare does not pay for everything. For example, Medicare does not pay for 24 hour care at home, meals delivered to the home, homemaker services (shopping, cleaning, laundry), or personal care services unless it is paired with skilled nursing or therapy services.
